On Writing Well-The Audience

Original Paragraph:
In terms of craft, there's no excuse for losing readers through sloppy workmanship. If they doze off in the middle of your article because you have been careless about a technical detail, the fault is yours. But on the larger issue of whether the reader likes you, or likes what you are saying or how you are saying it, or agrees with it, or feels an affinity for your sense of humor or your vision of life, don't give him a moment's worry. You are who you are, he is who he is, and either you'll get along or you won't.

This paragraph contains some very good advice I think. It basically tells you to write how you want to write, but don't break any obviously wrong rules so you look stupid. The author of this book really pushes its readers to show their own identity through their writing. I really enjoyed reading this book this year. I would recommend it to anyone.

Twilight

Original Paragraph:
He took another step toward me, till he was just inches away. He lifted a lock of my hair and sniffed at it delicately. Then he gently patted the strand back into place, and I felt his cool fingertips against my throat. He reached up to stroke my cheek once quickly with his thumb, his face curious. I wanted so badly to run, but I was frozen. I couldn't even flinch away.

This is the part when Bella is facing the evil vampire, James. It is weird to me that the vampires are so gentle before they are going to kill a human. It's almost like they are flirting with their prey before they kill them. Parts of this series are a little bit creepy, but overall I really enjoy these books.
